Overview
General Assembly hosted a hackathon bringing in the best talent in design and software engineering to create a working product in just two days. Our team created g33k0ut, an iOS meetup app that brings geeks of all fandoms together to find a community where they can call home.
I’m proud to say that my team won Best Implementation for our product.
Research
After several rounds of deliberations of what we wanted our app to be, my design partner, Celine, and I started conducting user surveys and interviews. To better understand the landscape of why people use meetups and what their past experiences are in those spaces, we asked a series of questions.
We conducted:
- 13 online surveys
- 5 interviews
Our key findings from our research were:
Users are looking for a community where they feel like they can belong
Users attend meetups because they want to learn something new
Users are concerned about being around a big group of strangers
Persona
We synthesized our data to create our proto-persona, Seth Doyle. He is new to the city and is looking for a community of LARPers (Live Action Role Play) to belong to. But, he doesn’t want to join just any group, because he fears large groups and the misuse of his personal information. With his pain points in mind, we developed a unique use case for our app.

Problem Statement
We believe that by designing a mobile app that allows geeks to find meetups, we will allow them to find a community where they can connect with people who share similar interests and learn something new.
User Flow
Celine and I created a user flow for Seth’s path through our app. Our developers used this to understand the flow of the app, as well as to what APIs they needed to pull from in order for our app to be functional.
